Berkwood Plans Fieldwork on New Anomalies at Lac Gueret South Graphite Property

18.02.2015  |  The Newswire

Vancouver, BC / TheNewswire / February 18th, 2015 / Berkwood Resources Ltd.. (TSX-V: BKR) ("Berkwood" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has received recommendations from geologist, Alain Berclaz, P. Geo and CEO of Abgeoconseil Inc., for next stage fieldwork programs on the Company's Lac Gueret South and East Graphite Properties ("the Properties"), in Northeastern Quebec.

The recent completion of a magnetic-electromagnetic (MAG-TDEM) helicopter-borne geophysical survey on Lac Gueret South Property successfully delineated 6 targets (101 anomalous stations) which are multi-kilometer in dimensions (see press release February 10, 2015). Mr. Berclaz has recommended a fieldwork program in order to quickly advance exploration in consideration of the high potential for prospective Graphite mineralization. Mr. Berclaz's recommended field program begins with a ground geophysics survey in the form of the PhiSpy ground TDEM system. This system is particularly well suited to better define the conductance and geometry of near surface conductors up to a maximum depth of 15 meters and to fill the gap between powerful, deep penetration airborne TDEM systems and very small size EM devices such as the Beep Mat.

Proposed work:

Phase 1: Continued Delineation of Exploration Targets

  • -- Permitting for prospecting, grid line cutting ;

    -- Ground Geophysical Survey (PhiSpy ground TDEM) ;

    -- Prospecting of near surface EM anomalies ;

    -- Drilling of near surface EM anomalies ;

    -- GIS Data Integration and report.

Phase 2: Stripping, Trenching, Drilling, Sampling and Assaying of Identified Mineralized Zones

  • -- Permitting for stripping and drilling ;

    -- Stripping, trenching, geological mapping, sampling and assaying ;

    -- Bulk sampling and metallurgical testing ;

    -- Drilling program with the objective to define an Inferred and Indicated mineral resource ;

    -- GIS Data Integration and Ni43-101 compliant technical report.

Phase 3: Regional Delineation of New Exploration Targets over 5,000 km2

  • -- Compilation and merging of all available geological, geochemical and geophysical datasets ;

    -- Combination of all regional geological, geochemical, geophysical and topographical data into a merged geo-referenced dataset for data mining ;

    -- Development, calculation and analysis of parameters in priority related to Graphite mineralization but also for other known mineralization (gold, base metals and Rare-Earths);

    -- Application of computer-assisted detection modelling with reference to known Graphite mineralization and other eventual commodities ;

    -- Generation of new regional Graphite exploration targets for staking and ground follow-up reconnaissance.

The Lac Gueret East and South Graphite Properties

Berkwood has an option to earn a 100%-interest in the 5,788 ha Lac Gueret South Graphite Property, located in northeastern Quebec. The property borders the southern boundary of Mason Graphite's Lac Gueret Project which has a NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate with measured & indicated mineral resources of 65.7 million tonnes grading 17.2% Cgr (including 9.7 million tonnes grading 31.2% Cgr)*. Berkwood also holds a 100% interest in the Lac Gueret East Graphite Property which is adjacent to the eastern boundary of Mason Graphite's Lac Gueret Property. Berkwood's Lac Gueret East and South Graphite Properties share a similar geological environment to Mason Graphite`s Lac Gueret Property including along strike stratigraphic units and structures.

The Properties are part of the Archean Ulamen Complex (2780 to 2680 Ma) mainly composed of (i) gneissic tonalite and granulitic tonalite gneisses interlayered with (ii) minor mafic metavolcanics and metagabbros. The Archean Ulamen Complex contains units of Paleoproterozoic units reported to be metasedimentary in origin and stratigraphically correlated with the Gagnon Group. Units of the Gagnon Group present on or adjacent to the Properties include: biotite, garnet, sillimanite paragneisses and graphitic schists of the Nault Formation; iron formations with ferruginous quartzites and cherts of the Wabush Formation; quartzites of the Wapussakatoo Formation (1868 Ma); and dolomitic and calcitic marbles of the Duley Formation (Source: Quebec government public file Sigeom MERQ RG2013-01).The overall structural pattern is an arc with gneissic fabrics striking NNE-SSW in the Lac Gueret East Property passing through E-W to WNW-ESE in the Lac Gueret South Property.

Gneissic graphite deposits have a sedimentary or hydrothermal origin. Sedimentary graphite deposits occur as graphite rich paragneisses where the original organic content accumulated during sedimentation and transformed into graphitic carbon flakes during metamorphism. Northern Graphite's Bissett creek deposit as well as Ontario Graphite's Kearney Mine, or the Mason Graphite Lac Gueret deposit and Focus' Lac Knife deposit in Quebec, all located within paragneisses of the geologic Grenville Province, are archetypal prime examples of this type of deposit.

Hydrothermal graphite deposits occur as graphite in veins and breccias where the graphite is associated with migrating supercritical carbon-bearing (C-O-H) fluids or fluid-rich magmas associated with igneous or volcanic activity and magmatic degassing. Zenyatta Ventures' Albany Graphite deposit is a unique example of a hydrothermal graphite deposit in which a large volume of highly crystalline, fluid-deposited graphite occurs within an igneous host of the Archean Superior Province in Northeastern Ontario.

In the case of sedimentary graphite deposits, the economic quantifiers are graphite flake size, quality and quantity. Lump or vein graphite from hydrothermal graphite deposits is comparable with high-purity synthetic graphite.
